Reasons To Cook With Ghee
When cooking your curries, do you reach for the butter, coconut, or olive oil? But have you thought the flavours aren’t the same as in an amazing Indian restaurant? You need to try to cook with Ghee.
“Cooking with Ghee lifts your cooking to another level. I always have a pot handy and prefer to cook with this than cooking oils when I want to make something extra delicious” Shelly, founder of Bang Curry.
What is Ghee
Ghee is a form of clarified butter. It contains a high level of unsaturated fats and so relatively speaking, it’s a ‘better for you’ fat.
It’s cooked longer than clarified butter to remove all the moisture, and the milk solids are allowed to caramelize before being strained which gives the nutty flavour Ghee is known for. This process means that ghee is naturally lactose-free!
Ghee has been used for thousands of years in Indian and Bangladeshi cooking and is a staple in Ayurvedic medicine.
Is Ghee like butter?
The smell of pure Ghee is absolutely wonderful. It has a richer, more nutty flavour profile than standard butter. Ghee is also much thicker, and not creamy like butter.
Ghee doesn’t contain water so has a higher smoke point than butter, so it’s a great choice for high-heat cooking.
Both ghee and butter have similar caloric differences and the same saturated fats.
Is Ghee healthy?
Ghee is packed with beneficial omega fatty acids and is high in vitamin A and vitamin E. It also contains anti-inflammatory fatty acids including butyric acid. It is free of preservatives, additives and unhealthy trans fats.
How to cook with Ghee
You can butter or oil for ghee in any of your favourite dishes. It cooks without burning so it’s an excellent choice for cooking at high temperatures.
Just add it to your pan as you would butter.
Other Ghee Uses
Ghee is a wonderful addition to your morning coffee instead of coconut oil. Known as Bulletproof coffee or keto coffee, a dollop of ghee in your morning brew is beneficial, helping to boost digestion and energy.
It’s best consumed on an empty stomach.
