According to the Social Marketing Foundation (SMF), food insecurity and hunger amongst children has become an ‘urgent national challenge’ with almost two million children in the UK going short of food in 2020. In London alone, 17% of children experience food insecurity – that is one in six children (Mayor’s Fund for London, 2019).
So, what is food insecurity? Someone is ‘food insecure’ when they lack regular access to enough safe and nutritious food due to a lack of money and other resources for obtaining food (Mayor’s Fund for London, Food and Agriculture Organisation). With the absence of free school meals over the summer holidays, this situation is only exacerbated amongst children in their pivotal development, and BANG! Curry x Kitchen Social are on a mission to help.
Kitchen Social is a programme established by the Mayor’s Fund for London and the largest independent provider of food for children in London during the school holidays, set up with the aim of battling holiday hunger. Whilst the government announced a funding packaging in 2021 to alleviate food poverty amongst those eligible for free school meals, there are still 1.7 million children excluded. That’s where Kitchen Social comes in. The programme allows children and young people to get a free, healthy meal and socialise in a safe place over the holidays. During the 2019/2020 academic year, Kitchen Social worked across 81 hubs in 24 boroughs, providing just under 500,000 meals to over 13,000 children and young people.
BANG! Curry has teamed up with Kitchen Social previously and will continue to provide children with hot meals during the summer holidays and run-kid friendly, enjoyable cookery classes to encourage home cooking from a young age. Last year, we cooked a delicious and kid-friendly Chickpea and Potato Bangla Curry using our BANG! Classic Bangla spice kit. As part of #MeatlessMonday, why don’t you try and encourage others to try this recipe?
Through your BANG! purchases, we are able and will continue to work with Kitchen Social to combat holiday hunger during the summer holidays. Let’s work together and ensure that ‘food insecurity’ is tackled.
